London
London is not just the capital of England, but it is also the capital of the Britain as well. Encompassing an area of some 1,579km2 it is home to numerous ethnic groups and religious denominations.
In today’s World London is famous as a financial, business and cultural centre. It is one of the world’s major cities in the world. Among all major cities of the European Union is also the most populous city as well. It was also stated that the international centre for business.
London has five international airports and is split in two: Greater London and the City of London. The city of London is actually only 1 square mile and has a population of 9,200 while Greater London occupies 609 square miles.
All major government buildings are located in London. The government in the United Kingdom is based in London. Speaking of local government in London, the terminal is controlled by the Greater London Authority which is popularly known as the GLA. It consists of the mayor of London and the London Assembly. London Transport is one of the best in the country.
Birmingham
Birmingham is the second largest city in Great Britain. Only London has more people. Many sections of Birmingham were heavily damaged by German bombs during World War II. These sections have been rebuilt since the mid -1900’s as part of an urban renewal program.
Birmingham’s factories manufacture a wide variety of products. The chief items include automobiles, computers, electronic circuits, machine tools, and wire. Anglian settlers founded Birmingham, probably in the A. D. 600’s. The city became a trading center during the 1100’s, and industries began to develop there in the 1500’s.
Birmingham grew into an industrial city because of nearby coal and iron ore deposits, and other important natural resources. During the Industrial Revolution Birmingham became a major industrial center of Great Britain. Today, Birmingham and the surrounding communities form Britain’s chief manufacturing area.
Manchester
Manchester is one of Great Britain’s chief centers of trade and finance and is known as the ‘Capital of the North’ and is home to 441,200 people. Its port handles about 14 million short tons of cargo annually.
Manchester is noted in history as being one of the first industrialized cities in the United Kingdom and was a key location throughout the Industrial Revolution, which took place in Britain between 1700 and 1900.
Manchester also ranks as one of Britain’s leading manufacturing city. Products include chemicals, clothing and textiles, computers, electronic equipment, industrial machinery and machine tools, paper, precision instruments, and processed food.
The downtown area of Manchester has many buildings that date from the 1800’s, when the city became a major industrial and trade center. A number of the buildings were constructed to serve the needs of industry and trade but are now used for other purposes. Manchester Cathedral, built in the 1400’s, is another famous landmark. The city has an international airport. It is also a center of railroad transportation.
Liverpool
Liverpool is one of the largest metropolises of England. This town is located near the east coast of the Mersey estuary. It is a large commercial and manufacturing city. The commercial center of Liverpool is one of the largest shopping districts in Great Britain. Tourism plays a large role in the city’s economy.
Major industrial facilities of the city include flour mills, sugar refineries and an automobile manufacturing plant. Auto Industry is also an important industry here. In recent times, the city’s economy grew by leaps and bounds.
Transport to Liverpool is very developed. There are several types of means of transport available to Liverpool. Mersey crossings are a major mode of transport. Shipping remains as important economic activity in the Liverpool area today.
During World War II, German bombers heavily damaged the city and its docks. Since the war, the decline of the port, plus other factors, has contributed to a high rate of unemployment in the city.
Lancaster
Lancaster is a major tourist destination in England. While the tourism industry in England has reached the pinnacle of success for the city of Lancaster has become one of the most important in this country. That is why thousands of tourists arrive in this city everyday.

Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland but Scotland’s second largest city. It has been the capital of Scotland since 1437 and has around 500,000 occupants.
One of the top tourist destinations in Europe, Edinburgh regularly plays host to around 13 million visitors who come to look at its heritage, which includes the old and new town districts of Edinburgh. In addition the city boasts some of the finest architecture to be found in Britain as well as some of the oldest.
