Importing cars into the UK
As a Citizen you are entitled to purchase a vehicle in any other Member State. Prices for vehicles will vary from country to country and it is important to check and research all costs prior to making your purchase.
Prices that you need to take into account:
- The cost that you must pay for the car.
- Any export costs from the country of purchase.
- Any import costs and taxes from the country you are importing into.
- Transport/travel costs including any insurance costs.
- Any costs for modification that may be required to make the vehicle conform to legal requirements, this is most likely if you are importing a left-hand drive vehicle into the UK.
Vehicle you Can Import
All vehicles that pass the requirements of their category can be registered and licensed for road use within the UK. This information focuses on passenger vehicles. There are additional requirements for vehicle with more than 9 seats and also goods vehicles.
Vehicles wishing to be registered and licensed in the UK must pass certain tests depending on their age.
- Vehicle less than 3 Years Old must pass through a SVA/ESVA test.
- Vehicles between 3 and 10 Years Old must pass through a SVA/ESVA test and MOT test.
- More than 10 Year Old does not require SVA/ESVA and MOT test.
All vehicles in UK must have a MOT test yearly after the third year since its first original registration.

Clearance and delivery from the destination port
You have to use a customs clearance agent to clear your vehicle through customs. Find a reliable agent at your local port. There will be several companies that specialize in the import of used Japanese vehicles.
Inspections and local regulations
There are some rules and regulations for importing the Japanese used vehicles into the UK. Generally you have to make sure that there is a “model report” available. If there isn’t one available you can arrange for one to be made, but this will add to your expenses. It is vitally important that you double check with your local customs and vehicle authorities that you are able to import your intended vehicle.

Arrival at Port
First the car arrives at Port of Destination and you get sent an “Arrival Notice”.
Bring that arrival notice to the port along with all the documents from Japan including:
- Bill of Lading
- Deregistration Certificate
- Invoices
- Your ID that has a photo
- Payment can be made by use of a Deferment Account, guaranteed cheque
- At the port, the first thing the shippers will want to know is if you’re really the owner. They will want to see the documents from Japan and you’re ID.
- Once they agree with you that you are the owner, they’ll finish with all the remaining shipment related issue.
